He helps create successful habits and approaches in students so they can make speedy technical progress when practicing and handle pressure effectively when performing.

Paul is an experienced, ambitious and innovative teacher with high-level qualifications and experience of performing in the world of Jazz, Musical Theatre, Classical music and Pop and Rock.

Approach to teaching…

Paul is an analytical teacher who will build a programme of learning around you and your needs. He is very flexible and will adapt his approach to your requirements and the agenda that you will set together.

What does he teach?

Paul will teach you skills that will be appropriate for your chosen genre/path in a way that is clear, fun and relevant. These will include:

  • Improvisation
  • Reading music
  • Specific, personalised practice routines that yield fast, effective progress
  • Performing under pressure
  • Composition skills/Song-writing
  • Command of physical exercise which develop strength and coordination
  • Ability to analyse how/when to express the music appropriately
  • Musical theory

He is not an advocate of learning via a rolling programme of exams. This can be a very dull, expensive, long and counterproductive path that can dissuade many and dissolve potential.

Learning should occur independently of this and be based around material that motivates and excites students. Once this occurs the challenging skills required become relevant and much more attractive.

Sometimes exams are part of this path and that’s fine but they should never set the agenda long term. High quality teaching requires a personalised approach that can foster the individual needs of the learner so they grow in confidence, skill and hunger.

The piano is not an easy instrument but there is no doubt that good teaching will make it an easier, cheaper, and a much more enjoyable journey.

Testimonials

“Paul’s personalised teaching and extensive musical knowledge makes him a fantastic piano tutor for students of all ability levels. As a beginner, Paul discussed with me my musical tastes and aspirations, which then allowed him to tailor my lessons not only to my ability but also to my interests and preferences. I have made great progress in both my piano playing and music reading and would recommend Paul to anyone wanting to learn to play the piano. I can’t imagine you could get better!”

(Sarah – Teacher)

“Pauls is an excellent music teacher, I have not been with Paul for so long, however, he instantly gave me direction, gave great lessons and had me playing in no time! Paul is very knowledgeable and informative, and has taken my goals in to consideration whilst helping to develop my piano playing. I strongly recommend anyone of all ages and playing ability to start learning/developing their skills with Paul.”

(Tom – Composer)

“My 8 year old daughter has been having piano lessons with Paul since January. Paul is very good with her and makes you feel right at home. My daughter can be quite difficult at times as she is on the Autistic spectrum, but this poses no problem for Paul as he is very good at bringing her back on task. She loves going to the lessons and likes to play Queen and Coldplay to name a few. I am very pleased with her progress and would highly recommend Paul to anyone who is considering tuition.”

(Melanie – Parent of Student)

“I’m a (very) mature student of Jazz piano with a lot of musical knowledge but not much technical ability. Paul quickly understood what guidance I needed and set about providing it. I know i’m demanding, fortunately he’s always patient and encouraging. We spend far too much time sharing musical stories – my fault entirely – but the lessons are always a pleasure!”

(Nick – Jazz Pianist)
